Resumen

In an environment in which SMEs increasingly search for opportunities abroad and in which they have to face mounting competitive pressure on their home markets, efficiency is vital. While there are little doubts on the benefits that a more structured and formalized procedures can yield, little research has been conducted that provides the manager of SMEs with a tool for assessing the firmαs readiness for more formalized procedures.

This paper suggests, based on an in-depth case study of a manufacturing SME in the Mexican context, to group the factors that determine formalization success in a more meaningful manner. Whether a SME can formalize a process successfully depends on two dimensions, its capability to formalize a process, determined by availability of resources and knowledge, and the formalizability of the process itself, determined by whether or not the procedureαs output permits a more formal approach and by the processα complexity. Assessing those dimensions separately allows the manager to determine whether the organization should focus on increment its capability of formalization, or if the procedure itself should be re-considered in order to yield the most positive benefits.
