Resumen

This problem solving analysis describes and examines the substandard performance of a Chinese state-owned enterprise´s purchase department. Reviewing relevant literature on Supply Chain Management as well as on cultural idiosyncrasies, it proposes that the concept of Cross-functional teams is best suited to improve the department´s performance. However, the analysis argues that, based on observation, the concept cannot be applied without prior adaptation to the Chinese cultural background. Particularly the communication, cooperation and individual reputation heavily influence upon a measure´s success and thus have to be taken into account. The analysis suggests that business theory in general should be adapted to the cultural backgrounds within which it is applied.
