Resumen

The awareness of corruption has increased significantly in the past decades on a worldwide level due to factors of distinctive origin. Usually people have a very basic idea of what corruption is. But indeed these ideas are very different making the definition and understanding of, and the discussion about corruption quite difficult.

The thesis at hand outlines different theoretical aspects in order to apply these theories to the bribery scandal of Walmart in Mexico. The key findings of this work establish an understanding about how institutions affect corruption levels and the fight against the phenomenon and on how multinational enterprises adapt their strategies to the environment they operate in, in order to succeed in a global, highly competitive business environment. This paper contributes to the better comprehension of theories on corruption and their relation to reality.
